The Bay of Navarino doesn’t look like a typical Greek sea.
Much of the Aegean and Ionian Seas are exposed to wind and waves. The Bay of Navarino is different. Enclosed on three sides, protected by Sfaktiria, it’s one of the flattest, calmest areas in Greece.
Which makes it extremely suitable for stand-up paddleboarding — especially for beginners.
Why the Bay of Navarino is Ideal for SUP
The combination of flat seas, minimal boat traffic, and stunning scenery makes the bay one of the best SUP destinations in the Peloponnese.
You paddle from Gialova Beach with Sfaktiria in front of you, Niokastro visible to the south, the lagoon and Paleokastro behind you.
Ideally, visit “Chelonaki”, the small island located in the middle of the bay.
Best Time
Early morning — before 09:00 — is the best time.
A light westerly wind usually blows at noon. Late afternoon it often calms down again.
Season: May–October. Calmest: May, June, September.
For Beginners
Stand-up paddleboarding looks difficult, but it is not. In calm waters like those of Navarino, most people find their balance in the first 20 minutes.
Some tips:
- Start on your knees to feel the board before standing
- Feet parallel, shoulder-width apart, knees slightly bent
No previous experience is necessary. The water here is forgiving.
