The area of Gialova was first settled at the beginning of 1900. Raisin and wine exports led to the area’s commercial development. Today, the locals are mainly occupied in agriculture (olive oil, citrus fruits and vegetables) and tourism. Gialova’s lagoon is the most southern wetland of international importance in the Balkans. The high biodiversity of the region combined with its long history and exceptional beauty makes it one of the most attractive destinations in Greece.

ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITES

  • Nestor’s Palace at Chora (12 km): It was inhabited from the 13th to the 11th century B.C.
  • Palaiokastro (4 km followed by 600 m along a footpath): Frankish castle that was built around 1281 A.D.
  • Pylos Museum: Findings from the Neolithic Age to the Hellenistic period.
  • Methoni Castle (17 km): Venetian castle dating from 1209 A.D. The largest castle in the Peloponnese, covering an area of 1,200 acres.
  • Ancient Messini – Ithomi (53 km): 8th century B.C. One of the most interesting archaeological sites of Greece. There is also a museum. www.ancientmesseni.gr

EXCURSIONS

  • Holy Monastery of Zoodochos Pigi of Sgrapa: Panoramic view of the area.
  • Sfaktiria island: Moor at the island jetty and visit the Chapel of Assumption and, a little further, the Russian church of Saint Nicolas, which was built in 1997 using large tree trunks. Follow the island’s coastline towards the lighthouse and you will come across the monument of the Italian philhellene Santaroza and the picturesque small natural harbour “salonaki”.

WATERFALLS

  • Waterfall of Kalamari – Schinolaka (3 km): Drive up towards Schinolaka and follow the signposts up to the start of the footpath (20 minute walk).

  • Stenosia Waterfalls (12 km).

  • Polylimnio (20 km): Follow the signposts from the village Kazarma.

  • Neda (73 km): At Kalo Nero, after Kyparissia, turn right and then follow the road towards Sidirokastro up to the village Platania.

WALKS & CYCLING

  • Gialova Lagoon (2 km): Birdwatching: One of the most important wetlands in Balkan Peninsula – 271 species of birds have been identified.

  • Nature Trail: Educational trail through 8 different habitats.

  • Palaiokastro (4 km): Follow the coastal road along Divari beach and park at the end of the road. Cross the bridge and follow the path ascending to the left (25 minute walk).
